The apex court reached the decision today Monday, May 22, before moving on to rule on who should be the party’s leader. The Supreme Court has dismissed an application filed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff against the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the party. The apex court reached the decision on Monday, May 22, before moving on to rule on who should be the party’s leader.

Sheriff had filed the application in a bid to stop Makarfi from challenging an Appeal Court decision which named him as the rightful chairman of the opposition party. However, the Supreme Court held that Sheriff’s application was invalid because the Makarfi appeal was properly filed.

The Appeal Court in Port Harcourt ruled in favour of Sheriff on February 27 and the Makarfi faction approached the Supreme Court to challenge the decision on March 16.
