When you hear the word “Democracy” as a Nigerian, oftentimes the next thing that comes to mind is “Freedom”. Maybe because we spent years being ruled by British then later at some point by Military, i think that explains the joy that comes with this day June 12 when MKO Abiola is said be the winner of the 1993 election.
It is just the right thing to do that we celebrate Democracy Day in Nigeria annually on June 12 rather than May 23, because Nigerians came out in their numbers all across the country to cast their votes.
But do we still have Democracy?
Well, it sure isn’t Military tho not perfectly practiced like other developed countries such as America. Election is worth celebrating yearly, leaders by the people for the people is a very powerful process and yes Democracy is worth celebrating annually.
We now have democratically elected Presidents, Governors, Lawmakers, Judiciary & Activists. We can now write petition if we are not pleased about a particular issue in our society, stage legal and peaceful protest, freedom of speech, one Nigeria etc, yes Democracy is worth celebrating annually.
Sadly, the country is not exactly where it’s suppose to be especially security, food and infrastructure. There are corrupt politicians, civil servants and individuals driving Nigeria back as much as some of us want it forward. There is 364 days to lament about the terrible situation of Nigeria but today June 12, we celebrate the goodness of Democracy and it’s prospects for our great nation NIGERIA.
